Provided the weather cooperates, the Seattle Department of Transportation will be re-paving the eastbound lane of North 125th Street tomorrow, March 30th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  All Eastbound traffic will be detoured to Stone Way and 128th Street during the roadwork, and police officers will be assisting traffic. For recent high school and college graduates, here is a list of 11 things they did not and will not learn in school.

RULE 1......Life is not fair; get used to it.

RULE 2......The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

RULE 3......You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.

RULE 4......If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

RULE 5......Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.

RULE 6......If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

RULE 7......Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.

RULE 8......Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades; they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

RULE 9......Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summer off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

RULE 10.....Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

RULE 11.....Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Developer Shraga Biran is puzzled by the opposition to his development plans, and says that he is not out to make, "speculative money" in today's Seattle Times article dedicated to Point Wells and the developer.

Oh Really?!?  Who is he kidding?  The residents of Richmond Beach have been pretty clear.

Please learn why the Richmond Beach and surrounding communities oppose Biran's plans.  Go to www.saverichmondbeach.org, and please help if you can.

Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a public meeting to gather input on the future of Seattle Parks and Recreation’s outdoor facilities (Parks, Trails, Off Leash Areas & Boating) on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 (TODAY) at Bitter Lake Community Center, located at 13035 Linden Ave. N from 7 – 8 p.m.

Seattle Parks & Recreation encourages the public to attend and also to answer a quick nine question survey located at the plan update site:

The meeting is the last opportunity to provide Seattle Parks and Recreation input on preserving and developing public outdoor recreation facilities in Seattle for the 2011 development plan.  After the parks department gathers community input, they will update the 2006 development plan; the plan establishes eligibility for state grants through the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office.  

Parks staff will then brief the Board of Park Commissioners on the draft 2011 Development Plan on May 26, 2011, and the Board will hold a public hearing on June 9, 2011.  

Northgate, Haller Lake, Bitter Lake, Broadview, Olympic Hills and Maple Leaf communities:  This is as close as the parks department is going to come to our communities, please come and support your outdoor parks!

Potholes are a significant issue in Seattle in the Winter and early Spring.  For example, the Haller Lake neighborhood has a number of potholes that keep reappearing on N 125th and 1st Avenue NE.  Help keep your neighborhood roads safe, report a pothole or other unsafe street repair issue as you see them.

When you report a pothole, SDOT assigns crews to help fill the problem area to keep the unfilled pothole requests at a steady low number across the city.  You can call in a pothole in your neighborhood to the pothole and street repair phone number below, or you can fill in an online pothole repair form.

You can also see all the potholes that have been reported, and the ones that have been filled on the Pothole Status Map.  Help SDOT reduce duplicate requests, please check the see if SDOT already has a pothole repair request for the location that concerns you.

Garage and Yard Sales are covered under new product safety laws.  It affects resellers of used children’s products.  Anyone selling these products that have been recalled or banned by the act is in violation. The act covers everything from toys with lead paint to cribs that might strangle babies. Check CPSC’s Web site http://www.cpsc.gov/info/resale/recalls.html for recalls before hosting or buying at a yard sale.  As a reseller of goods, you must verify the items you are selling have not been recalled.

Following are a few of our favorite tips found at http://www.yardsalesearch.com under their 101 tips for a successful garage sale:

• Check into your local and community laws concerning yard sales. Some communities require a yard sale permit.
• If you have tons of a certain item (kids clothes or toys), consider a set price for filling a bag.
• Put a "Free" box out front to attract and pull in "lookee loos."
• Be sure you have electrical outlets nearby to plug in any electronics to show buyers that they work.
• Put the bigger stuff towards the front so they can be clearly seen as people drive by.
• Post a sign that says "All Sales Final."
• Make sure that you have lots of change! Especially quarters, one and five dollar bills.
• Accept cash only. If someone doesn't have enough cash on them, offer to hold the item for them for a certain period of time.
• Keep your money safe and on you at all times.
• Have newspapers handy for wrapping fragile items.
• Keep a calculator handy for adding items up.
• Drop your prices in the afternoon.
• If someone makes an offer on an item that you aren't ready to come down on, offer to take their name and number in case you don't sell it during the yard sale.
• Consider selling some beverages or snacks, especially on a hot day. It's a great way to teach kids entrepreneurism.

Sound Transit celebrated the Mountlake Terrace Freeway Station dedication in a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday. The transit center, located in the Interstate-5 median at 236th Street Southwest, opened for service on Sunday, March 20th.  Here is the press release from Sound Transit.

Building A Raised Garden Bed Because of the nature of our region, building a raised bed for food gardening is a good choice.  You can create the proper mix of soil that isn’t weighed down by clay or too loose with sand allowing for better drainage.  This will allow your soil to dry sooner therefore you will be able to plant earlier in the spring! The Mayor will be in the Northgate area at the Aljoya Thornton Place Meeting Room on Saturday March 19th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  Here is the address to Aljoya: 450 NE 100th St.

The Mayor is meeting with as many people as possible as part of the Engage Seattle initiative this year.  He wants to meet with people who live, work, or play in the Seattle area to be able to voice their concerns and offer feeback directly to the mayor.  This will be one of numerous town halls, neighborhood visits, and outreach events.  

This event is probably the closest one we will get for the Northgate and Haller Lake neighborhoods.  Please let the Mayor know the issues in our neighborhood, i.e. potholes, crime, ect.
