Seattle Parks and Recreation - North Seattle Public Meeting

by Chuck Cady & Associates

Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a public meeting to gather input on the future of Seattle Parks and Recreation’s outdoor facilities (Parks, Trails, Off Leash Areas & Boating) on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 (TODAY) at Bitter Lake Community Center, located at 13035 Linden Ave. N from 7 – 8 p.m.

Seattle Parks & Recreation encourages the public to attend and also to answer a quick nine question survey located at the plan update site:

http://seattle.gov/parks/Publications/DevelopmentPlan.htm

The meeting is the last opportunity to provide Seattle Parks and Recreation input on preserving and developing public outdoor recreation facilities in Seattle for the 2011 development plan.  After the parks department gathers community input, they will update the 2006 development plan; the plan establishes eligibility for state grants through the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office.

Parks staff will then brief the Board of Park Commissioners on the draft 2011 Development Plan on May 26, 2011, and the Board will hold a public hearing on June 9, 2011.

Northgate, Haller Lake, Bitter Lake, Broadview, Olympic Hills and Maple Leaf communities:  This is as close as the parks department is going to come to our communities, please come and support your outdoor parks!

Komo Communities Reporter, Michale Harthorne, had an article on komonews.com about the Broadview, Bitter Lake and Haller Lake Neighborhood Plans.  The plans for these neighborhoods were completed in 1999.  Now that the plans are over a decade old, they need to be updated.

There will be four community meetings to update the neighborhood plan.  The first meeting will be at 9 AM to Noon on March 12th at Broadview-Thomson Elementary School located at 13052 Greenwood Ave N.

If you are not able to make the March 12th meeting.  There are online forms to fill out to help the City gather the information needed to update the neighborhood plan.

Here are some photos of the aftermath of a tree that blew over last night in the wind storm that blew through Seattle.  It happened about 4 houses south of 125th on Densmore.  I drove by at 6:30 PM and Densmore Ave. N was closed to the south of 125th with flares, police car, and a fire engine.

Seattle's Neighbor Appreciation Day - Saturday 2/12/2011

by Chuck Cady & Associates

Erin Corwin (Operations Manager) writes:

Saturday February 12th will mark Seattle’s 17th annual celebration of Neighbor Appreciation Day.  According to www.Seattle.gov, it began in 1995 when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate “a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other.”  From there Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed the Saturday before Valentines Day as Neighbor Appreciation Day!

Bitter Lake - Linden Ave Complete Street Project

by Chuck Cady & Associates

The above picture is taken from the City of Seattle Linden Ave N Street project page, please click on the picture to go there now.

I wanted to add a blog about the Linden Avenue North Complete Street Project.  The project proposes to construct continuous sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps, and tree planting on both sides of the street, buffered bicycle lanes, new street lighting, pavement, and street markings on Linden Ave N from 128th St to 145th St.  The project will create a seventeen block corridor to complete the missing link for the Interurban Trail.  The current trail in Seattle ends in Seattle at 128th St, and starts again in Shoreline.

The Seattle City Council adopted the Mayor's budget to fund the full Linden Ave N Complete Street project in late December of 2010!  Originally the project was to be completed in phases, but with the entire project fully funded, the city will now be advertising bids for the entire corridor in July of 2011.  Construction is planned to begin in October, 2011.

More information about the project can be found Here!

SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL
BUDGET COMMITTEE
Monday, June 14, 2010
10:30 a.m.

Great job keeping our pools, community centers, and parks open in 2010!

The Mayor and the City Council are announcing the changes for the 2010 Seattle City Budget on June 14th at 10:30am during the Seattle City Council Budget Committee Meeting.

The good news is that all the Seattle swimming pools and community centers will remain open for the balance of 2010!  Great job to all of you who told your personal stories about the Seattle pools, community centers, and park services.  Your voice was heard!  The city council stated that, "Mid-year reductions also recognize the importance of Parks to residents of Seattle" in their agenda.

The most significant reductions to the Seattle parks department budget were closing or reducing open days for some of the city's wading pools.  Also there were significant reductions to park maintenance, management, and personnel.

While this is fabulous news, keep in mind that bigger challenges are ahead in 2011.  There is currently a projected $50 million General Fund shortfall for 2011.  Many of the one-time tools the city used for the 2010 budget update are largely exhausted, and the City is not likely to have the same outcome with regard to direct services for 2011.

Please thank our Mayor and Council Members for their work to save our pools and community centers in 2010, and remind them of the importance of our pools, community centers and park services in 2011.  The City council will receive the results of the 2011 budget work on September 27th, 2010.

Budget Cuts Impact Seattle Parks and Recreation

by Chuck Cady & Associates

Keep our pools, community centers, and parks open!

The Mayors Office and Seattle City Council have some tough choices to make this summer in regards to which pools, community centers, and park services will no longer be offered due to a $10,000,000 budget gap for the second half of the 2010 budget.  Let your voice be heard by contacting city leaders.

Your personal story about the pools, community centers, and park services is the most important thing for them to hear to encourage them to keep these services open especially in a down economy when we need parks and recreation services available to us more than ever!

Following are some of the pools and community centers in our neighborhood that may be affected:

•    Helene Madison Pool
•    Bitter Lake Community Center
•    Meadowbrook Pool and Community Center
•    Loyal Heights Community Center
•    Ballard Pool and Community Center
•    Green Lake Community Center
•    Evans Pool

This is the last week before the decisions are announced on June 1st!  Send the  Mayor and City Council your personal story today!
